Talents on the Croisette
Once again, our alumni have done us incredibly proud. Altogether 26 films by 41 former Talents will screen at the Cannes Film Festival this week. Best of luck to you all!
Showing in Competition are 120 Beats per Minute, starring Yves Heck; Jupiter’s Moon, directed by Kornél Mundruczó, produced by Viktória Petrányi and lensed by Marcell Rév; and The Square, edited by Jacob Secher Schulsinger. The Un Certain Regard section will present After the War, directed by Annarita Zambrano and written by Delphine Agut, and The Summit, produced by Matías Mosteirín. The Short Film Competition will include A Drowning Man by director Mahdi Fleifel, Damiana by director Andrés Ramírez Pulido, A Gentle Night, edited by Carlo Francisco Manatad, and The Ceiling, edited by Jussi Rautaniemi.
The Critics’ Week will show special screenings of Sicilian Ghost Story, co-directed by Antonio Piazza, and of Bad Bunny, directed by Carlos Conceição and produced by Joana Gusmão and Pedro Fernandes Duarte. Feature films will include La Familia, which was directed by Gustavo Rondón Córdova and presented at our Talent Project Market in 2014; Gabriel and the Mountain, directed by Fellipe Barbosa, produced by Yohann Cornu and written by Kirill Mikhanovsky; and Los Perros, co-produced by Maximilian Leo and Benjamin Domenech. Several shorts will also be competing: Los Desheredados, produced by Valerie Delpierre; Jodilerks Dela Cruz, Employee of the Month, directed by Carlo Francisco Manatad, produced by Armi Rae Cacanindin and edited by Lee Chatametikool; Real Gods Require Blood, produced by Michelle Eastwood; and Tesla: Lumière Mondiale, directed by Matthew Rankin and with costume design by Becca Blackwood.
The Directors’ Fortnight will feature five alumni films: A Ciambra by Jonas Carpignano, Cuori Puri by Roberto De Paolis, I Am Not A Witch by Rungano Nyoni (funded by the Berlinale’s World Cinema Fund), Mobile Homes by Vladimir de Fontenay, and The Rider, produced by Mollye Asher. The ACID programme will showcase three alumni films: Humidity, starring Slaven Doslo, produced by Natasa Damnjanovic and co-produced by Derk-Jan Warrink; Scaffolding, starring Keren Berger and produced by Gal Greenspan; and the short A Handful of Stones, produced by Mina Djukic and edited by Milena Petrovic and Dragan Petrovic.
Finally, five directors have been selected to present their projects at the Cinéfondation Atelier: Ruxandra Ghitescu with Otto the Barbarian, Firas Khoury with Alam, Pham Ngoc Lan with Cu Li Never Cries, Kamar Ahmad Simon with Day After Tomorrow and Chen-Hsi Wong with City of Small Blessings.
Michael Ballhaus: “If It’s a Movie, It’s Got to Move”
We mourn the loss of legendary German cinematographer Michael Ballhaus, who passed away on April 12, 2017. A frequent collaborator of Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Martin Scorsese, he was perhaps best known for his signature 360-degree tracking shots and received Academy Award nominations for Broadcast News (1987), The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989) and Gangs of New York (2002).
In 1990, Michael Ballhaus served as the president of the Berlinale’s International Jury, and in 2016 he received an Honorary Golden Bear. That same year, he gave a talk at Berlinale Talents, which you can revisit here. Read the official festival statement, in which Berlinale Director Dieter Kosslick remembers Ballhaus as “a great artist, a wonderful person and a longtime friend,” here.
Getting Interactive at Talents Buenos Aires
From April 18-22, the 12th edition of Talents Buenos Aires brought together 66 participants from 10 South American countries to explore “The State of Things” in a series of master classes, case studies, project labs, screenings and networking events.
Held at the Universidad del Cine during the Buenos Aires International Festival of Independent Cinema (BAFICI), programme highlights included master classes by Brazilian documentarian João Moreira Salles and Italian director Nanni Moretti. There were new interactive formats this year, such as individual “One by One” sessions, in which participants presented their work to their fellow Talents, leading to lively discussions about stylistic questions and upcoming projects.
And for the first time, Talent Press participants gathered their film criticism and festival impressions on a new blog, which will be updated throughout the year. Have a look at their work (in Spanish).
Call for Entries: Talents Tokyo
Submissions are now open until June 15 for the next edition of Talents Tokyo, to be held from November 20-25, 2017 during the TOKYO FILMeX Film Festival. The initiative is open to directors and producers from East Asian and Southeast Asian countries.
The upcoming edition will once again include the Next Masters Support Program, which is specifically aimed at Talents Tokyo alumni. It provides a Project Development Fund (to support script writing, research, casting and location scouting) as well as an International Promotion Fund (to enable festival participation, subtitling and PR efforts). In addition, a Fellowship Program allows alumni to participate in international project markets (covering airfare and registration fees).
This year, two past Next Masters Support Program winners will show their films in Cannes. Indonesian director Mouly Surya’s third feature Marlina the Murderer in Four Acts will have its world premiere at the Directors’ Fortnight, while Japanese director Atsuko Hirayanagi’s debut feature Oh Lucy! will screen in the Critics’ Week. Putting Pen to Paper: Talent Press
In this day and age, a flourishing press is more important than ever. The Talent Press initiative brings together and encourages emerging film journalists at six different festivals around the world. The next opportunity to join is here: Portuguese-speaking film critics can apply for Talent Press Rio by June 11. Applications for the Talent Press section in Berlin open again on July 3.
Talent Press offers annual workshops in Berlin, Buenos Aires, Durban, Guadalajara, Sarajevo and Rio de Janeiro. Participants get the chance to network, receive mentorship from seasoned critics, hone their writing and meet filmmakers from a wide array of disciplines. Their work is published on a dedicated website and on those of our partners, FIPRESCI and the Goethe-Institut. Peruse their latest reports from Buenos Aires, Guadalajara and Berlin here.
